Introduction Gordon Women's Cricket will again be entering a team in the U18 Brewer Shield competition for the 2018/19 season. Brewer Shield is the premier girls' competition played in Sydney by the Women's club sides and provides a clear pathway through to Women's Grade Cricket. In 2017/18 Gordon Women won the Brewer Shield (40 overs) and the Reg Tulk Shield T20 competition. The competition is played on Sundays from November through to the end of March with a short break over the Christmas/New Year period. We play on some of the best turf grounds in Sydney and the standard of the competition is high. Games are predominately 40 over matches with some 20 over matches scattered throughout the season. Gordon's Brewer Shield squad success in 2017/18 has resulted in some of the older girls taking on the challenge of Grade cricket which provides some opportunities for new players within the Brewer Squad. Playing Schedule (the actual draw is expected mid-to-late Sept.) The season is lengthy and the standard is high; Gordon requires girls who are serious about their cricket and who are committed to training (every Wednesday at Chatswood Oval) and playing every weekend for the full season. For girls who would like to play more socially, we also have Gordon teams participating in the Sixers Girls Cricket League T20 competition on Saturday afternoons. In addition there is potentially going to be an U15 Competition played on turf running from February 2019 which will allow some of our younger players who don’t make the Brewer Squad an opportunity to play at a higher level – once we get more information on this initiative we will spread the word.
Eligibility To be eligible for Brewer Shield girls must be aged 13 to 17 on 31/8/2018 - or, if younger, be in the NSW U13. Outside of those criteria we have been advised there will be no dispensations granted. Pre-Season Training Weekly pre-season Brewer training is run from 10 -12 at Artarmon nets -all eligible girls keen to participate in Gordon's Brewer program are welcome to attend these training sessions. Artarmon Reserve, Burra Rd, Artarmon Potentially every Sunday until 24/9 10am-12pm (to be confirmed) Chatswood Oval Saturday 8, 15 September 2pm-4pm (to be confirmed). Bring spikes to these sessions if you have them.
Regular Season Training
Training will be held on Wednesday 5:30 to 7:00 at Chatswood Oval - start date 3 October unless it rains. It is expected that girls will attend training on a regular basis.
In line with Gordon’s one club philosophy and to clearly show the development pathway, Wednesday training is for all players across all teams with the Brewer girls training with, and alongside, the Grade and Sixers girls. Selection To balance the desire to field our most competitive side, to allow for limited unavailability, for example due to illness or injury, and to provide for player development, we propose to select a Brewer Shield squad of 15 – 17 players (A core squad of 13 players and up to 4 shadows). All things being equal we anticipate selecting a team of 12 players each week from the squad. The players selected each week will generally be the girls that provide the strongest balanced team from the players available for selection that week. That is all girls in the squad should not expect to have equal numbers of games nor even, if selected, equal amounts of time batting or bowling. Some girls may play a majority of games whilst others may play 2 or 3. As the premier competition for this age group, the team batting and bowling orders will inevitably be determined by game situations. At Brewer Shield level, it will not be uncommon for some lower order batters not to bat at all in games (for example if the team is batting well) and equally if opposition teams are dismissed quickly for some bowlers not to get to bowl. Selections will be made on a merit basis as assessed by the independent coach and selectors rather than on a participation basis. Attendance at training allows the selectors to identify the strongest players and their role within the team.
All girls should anticipate being rostered off for at least one game. Girls who are initially identified as being likely to play fewer games will be notified as such (Shadows) so that they can plan to play other forms of cricket (eg Sixers or mixed cricket in the NSJCA or MWJCA competitions) to maximise opportunities for game time. Any player who is selected as a Shadow should expect to be offered the chance to play a minimum of 2 games during the season.
Any Gordon Player who is age eligible can be called into the Brewer Squad should their performance merit inclusion and opportunities arise.
The squad will be selected on performance in the 2017/18 season, performance at the 2018 Gordon Talent Academy and a specific Brewer Trial. Trial The Brewer Shield trial will be held on Sunday16 September at Artarmon nets from 10-12am.
We will relay the results to players on an individual basis prior to posting the detail of the selected squad and shadows on the Gordon Women's website.
